I'm Claire (McPartlan) Nichols. I'm an Art Director/Designer residing in the greater Boston area. As a designer, I strive to make things easier for people to read, understand, interact with, and enjoy. We live in a great, big, fantastical world, and despite this, we are still surrounded by problems, big and small. Although design can be used to merely delight a user, it is my belief and my mission that design should be used to help solve problems in a manner that delights as much as it helps. Rather than form following function, I side with Frank Lloyd Wright on the matter – "Form follows function - that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union."
If you've taken a look through my site, you've noticed there are sections devoted to "Work" and "Play." These are my design and photography endeavors, respectively. I consider design to be my vocation – the thing I'm meant to pursue to aid in the betterment of our world. I consider photography to be my play – the thing I do that gives me joy, unbound by constraints and problems to solve. While I love each medium in different ways, it is at the intersection of the two that I am happiest creating.
Some things that give me joy: Marimekko, architecture, industrial design, furniture design, color, the ocean, exploring the world, home renovation projects, creating/experiencing music, seductive typography, organizing, helping others organize (and tidy their lives), a good cup of coffee, cute dogs, and time with loved ones.
